The String Sessions features three songs from Michael Lord's debut "Sway, " reinterpreted, rearranged, and recorded acoustically. Gone is the lush production of "Sway." In its place are the songs stripped down to piano, acoustic guitar, and vocals. Performing with Michael is the "A List" string quartet The Section, a group from Los Angeles whose credits range from T-Bone Burnett and Jon Brion to Fiona Apple and Christine Aguilera. cv
Bittersweet SongReviewed by Eagletess, 2004-07-27
While all three songs demonstrate a fluid harmony of sounds, blended in just the right proportions at just the right moment, what really got to me was the first song, "What Have You Got to Lose." When the refrain kicked in and all those wonderful voices (all him) chided me to give love another chance, I was immediately assailed by bittersweet memories of unrequited yearnings, dreams shattered and passions destroyed. The gentle tenderness in Michael's voice(s) laid such a sweetness to those bitter memories that I found myself crying as I listened, waiting to hear if he REALLY knew the journeyings of my soul. He did. He does. Dude, you've been there, and your gentle query, "Hey now, what have you got to lose..." makes me want to try again! Thank you.
Short but sweetReviewed by Jodante, 2004-07-24
I like Michael Lord's CD "Sway" so much that I decided to give his EP a listen and wasn't disappointed. In this set of string-based reworkings of 3 of his strongest tunes, the Section Quartet bathes Lord's passionate vocals in an almost hypnotic dreaminess. The intimacy of the arrangements enhance the material. By turns lulling, tender and seductive, this one's a winner.
